10 Reasons To Travel Solo

For many of us the concept of traveling solo is almost frightening because we are not used to being by ourselves.  We are not comfortable in our own skin and also in our own head.  Nevertheless, if we ever get to have the opportunity to travel alone, we find a bevy of reasons why it is a great experience.  Here are 10 of them:

  1. Easier to plan

When you are with a group of people, everyone has a different opinion, preference or time schedule which makes it challenging to make plans.  When it’s you alone, you have total control of every factor involved in the travel decision.

  1. You can listen to WIIFM

You get a chance to really be with yourself and you have no distractions and can really enter into the moment and fully observe the sounds, smells, sights and the social interactions of the people around you.  You get to understand that everything that you’re doing is based on the answer to the question “What’s In It For Me” (WIIFM).

  1. You get to work on your list of things

You make the decision to travel to the places on your bucket list and do the things you’ve always wanted to do.

  1. Easier to meet other people

We are a very gregarious species and like to interact with others.  When we are alone, people feel more comfortable approaching us.  So, as a solo traveler, you typically have a better chance of making acquaintance with strangers.

       5. You prove yourself

Just working up the courage to travel is a huge challenge for many people.  Doing it solo is that much harder and when you realize that you have mastered the art of going it alone, you get the satisfaction that you have proven yourself.  You are even better than you ever thought you could be.

           6. Self-esteem grows

Every challenge that you face, you have to overcome by yourself,  There is no one to rely on and you learn about your emotions and how you react in situations of stress. You end up dealing with every challenging and uncomfortable situation on your own, and that helps to build your character and self-esteem.

             7. You do what you want when you want

Solo travel lets you do whatever you want, whenever you want. No one dictates what you do and when you do it.  You make every call because you and only you have the power to do so.

             8. Better treatment

When you travel solo, you tend to be treated better by service personnel.  You stand out as a solo traveler and once people get wind of that, they tend to have more respect for you and treat you with more care.

            9. Enhance your relationship

If you do have a partner, absence might have a positive effect on the relationship.  Relationships can flourish when both partners are able to pursue their own individual interests.  After the period of absence is over, both partners tend to become much closer proving the old adage – absence makes the heart grow fonder.

             10. You get to play catch-up with yourself

Because your time is all yours, you get to spend a good part of it on things you’ve postponed without worrying about the impact it will have on someone else.

Traveling solo is not for the faint of heart. It can be very stressful and challenging.  But once accomplished, your reward is realizing how much better you feel about yourself and how much confidence you have to tackle some of the other things in life that have always been major obstacles.
